The new Rockpool Kayaks design Tourismo has arrived

After extensively testing the new Rockpool Tourismo, we've been sent this repport on his thoughts of the new kayak.

"At last, the wait is over ---- will it disappoint??

The Tourismo replaces the Rockpool GT which had been around for approximately fifteen years. The bow is similar to the old GT and the stern has similarities to that of the Taran.

Tourismo bow and Taran bow

Complete with a rudder, modified deck, new deck line attachment, improved thigh braces, four hatches which give access to a huge storage space this is a great expedition kayak.

The workmanship is of a high standard that you would expect from Rockpool. The usual arrangement can be made regarding the customisation of pattern, graphics, colours etc. The demo kayak was standard construction, white hull and deck with black trim, seat decklines and Rockpool symbolic black, slightly sparkly starfish!

The seat was standard glass construction with hip adjustments(removeable for a larger paddler).
Kayak dimensions- L=5.32M, width 55cm, height 32cm approx. Although no official info is available yet on volume, rest assured it swallows up gear.

While testing I did load it up with equipment that I would use on expeditions and still there was lots of space left!

Stability was good on both primary and secondary.

Performance and handling-On flat water I was able to cruise at 9.2km/hr over a 10km distance. speed dropped slightly in rougher conditions. The Tourismo responds extremely well to directional changes, turning/manoeuvring in tight spaces, I was surprised at the ease of this for such a big kayak!

The rudder uses the SmartTrack system , controlled by pressing of the pedals on each of the foot pegs. Paddling in rough water or windy conditions or just a directional change were helped by the rudder system making controlling/handling easier.

When loaded with gear, overall performance was marginally reduced (loaded over distance of 10km=8.4km/hr)

OVERALL OPINION

Loved the way this kayak handles, both empty and loaded. Great for expeditions or long distance paddling...for larger paddlers, I think they would enjoy having fun playing in big water with this kayak!!!

New recessed deck set up

The deckline attachments blend beautifully into the kayak rather than attachments with nuts and bolted or glued fixtures.

The cockpit thigh grips are great feature, giving the paddler instant connectivity. Added comfort is achieved with the kayak's high knee position.

There was plenty of room in the cockpit and wearing size 12 neoprene boots did not interfere with the deck pod aka sweetie hatch(oftenn a complaint with other kayaks).

I did add a layer of Karimat to the seat and hip adjustments for additional comfort.

The rudder is a great feature especially for long distance paddling. But equally, not using the rudder, it responds well to "Body, Boat, Blade"!!!

Good platform with stability in rough conditions for those who enjoy taking photos.

I weigh approx 70kg and on day trips/coaching I did feel I was on the light side for this kayak however for expeditions and loaded- I loved it!!

Thanks to Mike and his team at Rockpool for designing and producing another great kayak!"
